MM52: Surveilance

Summary

This article talks about how people behave and interact with their specific life-spheres. For instance people may behave differently dependent on who they interact with. This seems familiar with the Hawthrone Effect which covers similar grounds. This would cover the fact that people represent themselves as differently dependent on who they would be with. This article also covers the privacy side of social media and how having your parents as friends makes people seem like they are being observed. This article also coves Data Mining and how Facebook would use our data to try and find fitting advertisements. They have also conducted an experiment with the data and had done this in secret to see the effects. As it turns out it had effected the users emotionally. And this covers Edward Snowden's whistleblow about the US Government are seeking surveillance around the internet.

Are you bothered by people tracking your online movements? Is it a small price to pay for the benefits of a life online?

The benefits of this would only benefit the governments. However this data that they are seeking could be stolen by hackers or sold to companies so that they could use this to try and promote their content to the right people. Having to accept this change could potentially be bad as there are trolls who wouldn't intentionally mean to say rude things. However this could be misinterpreted to the extent that it could cause issues. This isn't even a small price to pay. Although this could promote good behaviour to a small extent. People may be more likely to go against this. An example of this would be the Xbox One's Kinect being always on at the announcement. Many of its fans considered this to be invasion of privacy since it would be a camera that would always stay on as long as the console is turned on. As well as that, this Kinect incident was further ranted about due to the fact that the Xbox One had to also be always online which lead to speculation about them spying on their customers. This was later on removed and if this was stopped from a small fraction of the population annoyed about this then the Surveillance could be just the bigger version of it. It may sound like a small price but it just removes the freedom aspect of the internet which makes it frustrating for an audience to enjoy the internet. So in conclusion I would be bothered by the fact that people could track my movement. What makes things more difficult is that hackers could use this to make matters worse so this problem about surveillance is further supported.

Introduction to NDM: reading and blog task

1) The key aspects of this longitudinal research compiled by the ex-Media Teacher was investigating the myth on how students would use the media. This investigation had primarily focused on the use of social media and how their Year 9 group would use it. When it had went down to the teaching methods used by teachers, they had used popular and mainstream media like X Factor which would try to be implemented in lessons to make them more engaging for the Year 9s.

Periscope has been seen as a revolutionary app which rivals Meerkat. This live streaming app would be appealing to an audience due to its unedited nature. And because of this it can easily promote UGC by live streaming events such as a survivors perspective or the view of a viewer watching a band play live. This links to piracy. This live streaming app could also promote piracy as this would let people who haven't paid for events or subscription based entertainment which might put these in a more illegal based content. To add on to this there is also the problem with Piracy. Due to the fact that it would present your location and its unedited nature would make representing someone's true mature of themselves to be a bit difficult as they might also have to behave in a good manner to an audience. So therefore this privacy aspect is ruined by the live streamers.

2) What made this essay successful was that she had always offered a challenging opinion to what she would say initially. This would therefore bring up the media debate that it offers. Since this is the case it is clear that she understands how to combat her points with Theorists such as McLuhan and therefore the use of theory would further emphasise the points that she is trying to create. The introduction is also considered quite successful as she has explained what Spotify is and has included rival apps such as YouTube and Tidal in her essay to try and make them clear enough in a comparison.

3) Digital Media has changed my life in both better or worse. For better it has helped me stay in touch with news stories as well as offer a form of communication to my friends which would therefore make it easier to talk about serious or social topics. This would therefore emphasise the social stand point to be very positive. As well as that, the new media has also made accessing information more convenient which has made accessing information and entertainment more easier. With the addition of YouTube and the variety of content it provides, it would enable me to try and watch content that I would enjoy as there are YouTubers who are dedicated to certain topics such as Comics which has made learning about these fictional characters more interesting as there would be a video format explaining it to me and many others as this would  dumb down information can be considered a benefit for both YouTuber and companies such as Marvel as these informational videos would serve to intrigue an audience like me into the stories that the Films adapt.

However the exact opposite can be argued for why it may have made it worse. Since it has a majority of content creators who would offer dedicated content that i would enjoy, I would miss out on watching shows on TV which has now been rendered useless. Why watch Sky News on TV when you could just as well watch Vice News on YouTube and many other channels dedicated to news. To add on to this even shows like The Jeremy Kyle Show have appeared on YouTube by submitting clips of their show on YouTube to try and promote the show there. This site has made me neglect TV as a format and instead primarily use YouTube as the main source for entertainment and information. To add on to this it has also affected me personally as I would procrastinate for long hours avoiding work due to the entertainment that is easily available to view. This would therefore limit the platforms that i would use and as a result YouTube has also introduced YouTube Red which is a subscription service available to Americans currently which would have high production value content which would look to match or merely under perform on TV standards. This would therefore make the decline of TV supported and this New Digital Media has made everything accessible due to convergence.
